In 2002 RBP Chemical Technology took a fresh look at fountain solution development. The result is the Concept 21® fountain solution system.
What is Concept 21®?
Concept 21® is not a conventional fountain solution. It is a totally new system featuring a combination of chemistry and delivery system that offers unprecedented capability on press.
Concept 21® is a unique tool designed to manage print characteristics on press by controlling the ink/water balance more precisely than ever before possible. Moreover, the “concept behind the Concept” is what gives the pressman the latitude to compensate for changes before and during the press run.
A mixer originally developed for the pharmaceutical industry blends RBP’s ADM (Acidic Desensitizing Modifier) and STM (Surface Tension Modifier) with house water, either treated or city. Adjustable proportioning controls on the mixer allow the operator to replicate the performance package of virtually any conventional fountain solution quickly and easily.
Why did RBP develop the Concept 21® system?
Concept 21® was developed to allow printers greater flexibility to address press-related problems at their facilities without purchasing multiple containers of different formulations. Changes in technologies sometimes lead to unexpected problems on-press. New presses and dampening systems, new plates, inks and papers may not perform well with existing chemistries. Correcting problems has generally required testing different fountain solutions with specific formulations. Concept 21® allows printers to handle these problems by using a single system to adjust chemistry to meet different conditions .
Isn’t this just another 2-part solution?
Not by a long shot! We have redesigned and concentrated the chemistry, using key ingredients not typically found in the printing industry. The delivery system blends these components in milliliters, not ounces, offering a level of precision and consistency never seen before.
Why is Concept 21® better than a conventional 1-step fountain solution?
First, remember that Concept 21® can duplicate the characteristics of most any single step solution. The big difference comes when problems are encountered on press. With a 1-step solution you can’t control the balance of specific components. Increasing or decreasing the concentration in the tank increases or decreases all of the components. The same is true when turning the water dials up or down. So addressing one problem may create another.
With Concept 21®, you can individually meter different amounts of each component, creating a new balance. For instance, increasing the desensitizing modifier will eliminate plate sensitivity without over-wetting the plate or over-emulsifying the ink.
What other benefits does Concept 21® offer?
The inherent design of Concept 21® gives the pressman precise control of the chemistry, which translates to better control of the ink/water balance. Users report substantial “hard” cost savings, including

Color management dictates more control over variation in the pressroom. Ink and water balance has always been a daunting task. The Concept 21® system accurately controls the variability in dampening system for all offset presses. Consistent print characteristics mean accurate color profiles.

How do I know your delivery system will be consistently correct, and won’t vary over time?
The delivery system was originally developed for the exacting needs of the food and pharmaceutical industries, which demand absolute consistency batch after batch. Once the correct formulation is determined it is locked-in.
Concept 21® will consistently deliver chemistry with less than 1 per cent variation, at any normal water pressure. Users report month after month of consistent performance.
Will our press operators need to continually adjust the formulation?
No! Once the correct formulation is “dialed in,” the settings and formulation will remain constant until adjusted for a job with different requirements. The control box can be locked, and access controlled. However, users have consistently reported no need to make adjustments while jobs are running, and that they change formulations far less often than they had anticipated.
How do we monitor the consistency of the chemistry?
Conductivity testing is the usual method of choice to monitor the chemistry and ensure that proper levels are being delivered. The system is easy to adjust with the use of a numerical scale.
Who will support start-ups, and for how long?
The RBP technical sales rep and RBP technical specialist/chemist will work with you during the start-up process. They will help select the right formulation(s) to meet the problems you need to solve. Training on how to adjust for desired chemical levels will follow. The RBP technical team will works closely with the printer until the chemistry is providing the desired results.
As always, both the RBP technical sales rep and the technical services department will be available to work with printers if any problems crop up in the future.
What are the environment characteristics of fountain solutions produced by the Concept 21 system?"
Printers typically use about 1/3 as much Concept 21® concentrate as they do with other concentrates. Working solutions produced with Concept 21® are typically far lower in VOCs, HAPs and SARA reportables, and normally require no special disposal procedures. Simply follow your normal operating procedures.
How is the pump operated?
The pump is driven by water pressure up to 75 psi. No electrical connections are required.
How much space does your delivery system require?
Very little. The actual metering station is only 18”x18”x9-1/2.”
It can be wall- or stand-mounted.
How does the delivered cost of your fountain solution
compare with others?
The per-gallon cost of working solution is comparable to that produced
with conventional fountain solutions.
